Originally Pilates was named "Contrology " by Joseph Pilates (1883-1967). JP was a sickly child and he dedicated his entire life to improving his physical strength. As a youth he was involved in Jiu-Jitsu, Boxing, and Gymnastics. WW1 saw JP teaching wrestling and self-defence in Lancaster Castle and that's where he began refining his Mat Pilates series of exercises.
Contrology /Pilates encourages the mind to control the muscles. Exercises teach an awareness of the breath, alignment of the spine, and strengthens the deep torso and abdominal muscles, specifically the Transverse abdominus. Later JP moved to NewYork and began working for the New York Balllet rehabilitating dancers from repetitive movement injuries.
Pilates is more than a exercise it's used for pre+ post hip and knee surgery, pre+ post pregnancy and virtually every kind of injury rehabilitation.
